I am a BACP Registered and Accredited Counsellor, and offer both long and short term counselling and psychotherapy. I offer private counselling to clients in a safe and comfortable room in Radyr, Cardiff.
Having qualified in 1996, I have over 20 years experience in many differing areas. Within this, I have worked with issues such as stress, anxiety and depression, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, drug and alcohol issues; bereavement and loss; relationship issues; domestic abuse; self – esteem; self – harm; suicidal feelings; employment issues and mental health issues.
The early years of my experience took place within Cardiff County Council, where I worked as a Senior Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor within the Cardiff Alcohol and Drug Team and Employee Counselling Service. I enjoyed this role for 14 years, before moving to the University of South Wales (previously University of Wales, Newport), where I have spent the last 8 years lecturing/tutoring on the Post Graduate Counselling & Psychotherapy Integrative Programmes. Within this role, I am able to share my passion and knowledge of this profession with student, trainnee Counsellors.
Alongside my teaching role at the university over the past few years, I have also developed my own Private Practice, as a Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor. Other positions during this time have included working as the Clinical Manager of a Community Counselling Service in Newport, Wales; Counselling young people in a Pupil Referral Unit; Counselling adults undertaking alcohol and/or drug detox at a detox unit within the Salvation Army; and a number of Employee Assisted Programmes.
Providing an empathic and safe relationship is at the heart of my counselling approach. It is my belief that given the right environment of acceptance and understanding, people feel more able to explore and resolve the issues which bring them to counselling. People are more likely to make and maintain changes using their own strengths and strategies. Counselling can help people to identify and capitalise on these strengths, whilst also exploring helpful strategies. Before this though, people need to feel understood and heard.
I describe myself as an Integrative counsellor, working from a Humanistic base, in a Person Centred and Motivational way. As an Integrative Practitioner, I am able to work flexibly with my clients, and incorporate different approaches within my work, for example, Motivational Interviewing (a strengths based approach which effectively supports and helps clients to make behaviour changes, i.e. to their drinking, drug use or eating); Cognitive Behavioural techniques (based on the approach of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – C.B.T) Solution Focused Therapy; Gestalt Therapy and Psychodynamic Therapy.
My approach is an integration of all the training I have undertaken over the years, but most of all, it has been developed through the experiences I have had with the many clients I have worked with.
I am an experienced Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor, and am passionate about working with people from all walks of life.
I work within the ethical framework of the BACP, and work within their strict confidentiality boundaries.
I work from a very comfortable, safe and accessible room, based in Radyr, Cardiff.
