EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a powerful therapy that I integrate into my work when it feels right for the client. We always begin with a conversation about whether EMDR could be helpful for you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why EMDR?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>EMDR is a highly effective therapy for a wide range of difficulties. It can help with single-event traumas such as road traffic accidents, accidents, medical emergencies, natural disasters, sudden loss, or witnessing a distressing event. It is also widely used for ongoing or complex issues, including childhood abuse, anxiety, depression, phobias, fears and low self-esteem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By targeting the memories and sensations that feel \u201cstuck,\u201d EMDR supports your brain in processing these experiences, so they no longer hold the same emotional power.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How Does EMDR Work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When we experience trauma, memories can become \u201cstuck,\u201d bringing back distressing images, feelings, or sensations long after the event. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation\u2014most commonly guided eye movements\u2014to help your brain process these memories, reducing their emotional impact and allowing you to heal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This bilateral stimulation can also involve gentle physical sensations, such as holding small buzzers that alternate vibrations in each hand. These rhythmic movements or sensations help both sides of the brain communicate and integrate difficult experiences, similar to what happens during REM sleep. EMDR is a well-researched, evidence-based therapy recommended by NICE and the World Health Organisation for trauma treatment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How many sessions will I need?<br \/>\nThis varies from person to person. Some people notice improvement after a few sessions, while others may need longer-term work, especially for complex issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do I have to talk in detail about my trauma?<br \/>\nNot necessarily.
